BFAR 8, continues to forefront pro-fisherfolk public service

Seventy-two years of pro-fisherfolk and pro-fishing industry service, BFAR 8 Regional office celebrated the 72nd Anniversary of the Bureau last July 1, 2019 at the Regional Freshwater and Aquaculture Production Center (RFAPC) in Babatngon Leyte.

Through the Republic Act No.177 which took effect on July 1, 1947, the Bureau has been created under the Department of Agriculture, tasked to undertake activities connected with fishery work in the country. Since then, the Bureau through its regional offices strived to be the leading agent on developing, managing and conserving the fisheries and aquatic resources in the country.

BFAR 8 on its end, pursues the realization of this mandate in Eastern Visayas through the implementation of various programs and projects such as the FB Pagbabago, Malinis at Masaganag Karagatan (MMK), Balik-Sigla sa Ilog at Lawa (BASIL), Special Area for Agricultural Development (SAAD), National Stock Assessment Program (NSAP), Shellfish and Seaweed Development Plans, fisheries production and post-harvest assistance, and more.

“Let us emulate Region 8 as a leader, a pro-fisherfolk and a pro-fishing industry agnecy. All together with these values, we can do wonders, “ were the words of empowerment to BFAR 8 staff of Regional Director Dr. Juan D. Albaladejo.

Considering the theme of the celebration, “Tagapagtaguyod ng Malinis at Masaganang Karagatan”, he urged BFAR 8 workforce to work hand-in hand and provide nothing but the best public service most especially to the Bureau’s main stakeholders- the fisherfolk.

In line with this celebration, series of fun-filled, energizing and nature-friendly activities have been conducted. Worth to mention is one of the Ridge to Reef measures of the Bureau, the tree-planting activity. This endeavor has been participated by representatives from the Provincial Fishery Offices(PFOs), technology stations, and the regional office’ divisions, sections and units. They have planted a total of 150 coffee, mangosteen, pomelo, jackfruit and cacao seedlings donated by DA RFO 8 within the RFAPC grounds.

Withal, BFAR 8 family has been divided into four groups, namely; the Ube (Violet), Green, Chambe (Blue) and Yellow teams. They have battled for the Fish- Amazing Race 2019 and overcame six (6) pit-stops which incorporated sustainable-fishing related games. In the end, Green Team emerged as the champion ( consists of staff from the Fisheries Costal Resource and Livelihood Project, Fisheries Protection and Law Enforcement Group and technology stations of San Roque Aquaculture Production Center, Regional Production and Aquaculture Production Center, University of Eastern Philippines, Laoang Multi-Species Hatchery, Borongan Tilapia Hatchery and Guiuan Marine Fisheries Development Center). They have been followed by the Yellow, Chambe and Ube teams as the 1st, 2nd and 3rd runners up. Further, BFAR 8 family also exercised and danced with zestfulness during the ZumbAquatics.

Thirty-four (34) Job Order employees and 12 Regular employees have been given with certificates and plaques of service award recognizing their decades of loyal service and commitment on attaining the mission and vision of the Bureau. Ten (10) awardees for Pasidungog Kababayehan were also recognized for their significant contribution towards the enhancement and conservation of the marine resources in the region. They were Assistant Regional Director Justerie Granali, Post Harvest and Marketing Unit (PHMU) Head Cylet Salvacion C. Lluz, Fisheries Production and Support Services Division (FPSSD) Chief Lea A. Tumabiene, Regional Fish Health Laboratory (RFHL) Head Dr. Nancy A. Dayap, Fisheries Management Regulatory and Enforcement Division (FMRED) Chief Remedios D. Lequin, Northern Samar PFO Loreginia Briones, Eastern Samar PFO Nelia Tomayao, GMFDC Head Nonita Cabacaba, Special Concerns Officer Lina Palobe and Sylvia Romero of Cashier.

Lastly, the celebration has been wrapped-up with a tribute for Ms. Sylvia Romero also known as Ma'am Bing, who has served the Bureau for several decades as a Cashier.

A day filled with exuberance and unforgettable memories, BFAR 8 family imprinted another page of wonder to its history. Indeed ,another celebration to look forward to, and another year of relentless service to the people and for the people.
