TACLOBAN CITY- Five (5) commercial fishing boats using an illegal fishing method called "Largarete" were intercepted in the municipal waters of San Vicente, Northern Samar by BFAR 8 Fisheries Protection and Law Enforcement Group ( FPLEG) on or around 11:58 p.m. of June 9, 2019.

Largarete is a type of gill net used for taking sardines and similar species. This fishing activity uses a 3.1 gross ton- vessel which is only allowed to be used in commercial fishing activities and not within municipal waters.

Alleged violators who are residents of Bulan, Sorsogon were doing actual illegal fishing activity when the FPLEG team apprehended them.

They have defiled several provisions of the Philippine Fisheries Code also known as RA 8550 as amended by RA 10654. These include Sections 86 (Unauthorized Fishing), 95 (Use of Active Gear in Municipal Waters, Bays and Other Fishery Management Areas), 113 (Commercial Fishing Vessel Operators Employing Unlicensed Fisherfolk, Fishworker or Crew), and 121 (Use of Unlicensed Gear).

A total of 18 tubs of fish catch with an estimate cost of P10,800 were seized from the said violators. Withal, 40-meter fishing nets were confiscated from each of the vessels. Each of the nets with an approxiamate market value of P20,000 were brought to the Regional Brackishwater and Aquaculture Production Center in Lavezares, Northern Samar for proper disposition and safekeeping.

The apprehending team is now preparing documents necessary for filing of administrative cases against these alleged violators.
