Continually forging efforts with various agencies and local communities towards marine resource protection and responsible environmental stewardship, the BFAR 8 joined the International Coastal Clean-Up (ICC) Day global movement today in Tacloban City

Together with the youth, barangay officials, employees of the City Government, and private sector representatives in Tacloban, the BFAR 8 family collected trashes along the coastline and streets of Brgy. Sagkahan, raising awareness on the impacts of plastic pollution while reinforcing the importance of shared responsibility in safeguarding the seas, particularly the Cancabato Bay.

Several sacks of trash, consisting of plastic bags, bottles, cigarette butts, disposable items, packaging materials, food wrappers, and other waste irresponsibly discarded along Station 6 (from Café Lucia to Kalipayan Road, Sagkahan), were collected during the coastal cleanup drive.

The activity headed by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) 8 highlighted the pressing need to address marine litter, which poses a significant threat to fisheries, biodiversity, and coastal communities dependent on the sea for their livelihood.

The ICC is celebrated annually every third Saturday of September, mobilizing volunteers in more than 100 countries. In the Philippines, it is recognized as the world’s largest volunteer effort for ocean conservation, aligning with the government’s advocacy for sustainable fisheries and environmental protection.

BFAR 8’s participation forms part of its broader initiatives under the “Bagong Pilipinas” campaign and the Fish Conservation Program, promoting awareness on the link between healthy oceans and food security.
