Enhancing Community-Based Sea Cucumber Ranching for Sustainable Development

In its continuous effort to promote sustainable development in the fisheries sector, the Southern Leyte State University (SLSU)–Bontoc Campus, in partnership with the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) 8, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) 8, and the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Liloan, conducted a ceremonial release of hatchery-bred sea cucumber juveniles and presented updates on the project titled “Enhancing Community-Based Sea Cucumber Ranching for Sustainable Development” on October 14, 2025, in Liloan, Southern Leyte.

A total of 3,000 hatchery-bred sea cucumber juveniles from the BFAR 8- Guiuan Marine Fisheries Development Center (GMFDC) were released into four (4) 1×1-meter nursery cages at Tagbak Marine Park, Barangay Tabugon, Liloan.

These juveniles will be monitored monthly and are expected to reach 100 grams by October next year. This milestone marks a major step forward in the project, which began its groundwork last year.

“BFAR 8 remains steadfast in our support for initiatives that align with our mission to promote responsible fisheries development. We recognize the vital role of our partners—SLSU, DOST, and LGU Liloan—in advancing science-based and sustainable fisheries practices. Mabuhay ang ating mangingisda! Mabuhay ang ating karagatan!” said Rowvic B. Docena, Provincial Fisheries Officer (PFO) of Southern Leyte.

Further, the session focused on project feasibility, ongoing studies, and strong inter-agency collaboration. Discussions with LGU officials highlighted the high market value of sea cucumbers, the ecological benefits of reducing pressure on wild stocks, and the suitability of Liloan—based on water quality tests—as an ideal site for this initiative.

The said project aims to provide a sustainable livelihood alternative for fisherfolk while promoting fisheries conservation.
