I. BASIC INFORMATION

Eastern Visayas serves as the geographical backbone of the Philippines and lies on the east central section of the Philippine archipelago. It comprises two main islands, Leyte and Samar, and consists of six provinces, namely, Biliran, Eastern Samar, Leyte, Northern Samar, Samar, and Southern Leyte. It is bounded on the east and north by the Philippine Sea with the San Bernardino Strait separating Samar Island from Southeastern Luzon; on the west by the Camotes and Visayan Seas; and on the south by the Bohol Sea with the Surigao Strait separating Leyte Island from Northwestern Mindanao. The Region has a total land area of 2,304,938 hectares, which is approximately 7.2% of the country’s total land area.

IV. FISHERIES PRODUCTION

Eastern Visayas contributed a total of 123,557.67 MT production to the country’s 4,400,373.01 MT volume of fisheries production in 2020

The data on fisheries production are subdivided into three different sectors, namely, commercial, municipal, and aquaculture fisheries. At a regional level, municipal fisheries exhibited the highest fish production among all sector for the past five years, 2016-2020.
